Who is Julian Harding?
Julian Harding took to swimming in July 2007 aged 11 years where he immediately set the pace for a swimming career spanning over a decade. A naturally competitive athlete he concentrated on breaststroke and butterfly events and till this day he still holds five age group records in breaststroke and butterfly, two national records in the 50 and 100 breaststroke events and other records in the relays and short course events. His talent earned him a place on the Maltese National Swimming Team aged 14 years – while he garnered a place on the team that took him to the World Championships (25m) in Istanbul when he was still 16 years old.
He also qualified in the breaststroke events for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing (2014). Julian also participated in the FINA World Championships in Doha (Qatar) and the Small Nations Games held in Iceland in June 2015.
Since then Julian had started to pass on his passion for swimming on the younger generation and founded his own club – AQUAHUB MALTA.
But his competitive edge does not let him rest. The COVID pandemic made him return to more swimming, running and cycling with the result that a few months later, and at his first attempt at Triathlon – he smashed the current National Record in the Sprint Triathlon event – not once, but twice in two races – with the current record now standing at 58min33sec (July 2021). With all the exercise and energy requirements to lead such a full athletic experience – Julian likes to vary his diet and eats a bit of everything. Needless to state that sometimes there are more carbohydrates than protein and that minerals are incorporated via a variety of fruit and vegetables which he consumes.
Drinking lots of water is also critical to him maintaining the energy required. The importance of a varied and nutritious diet is testament to his healthy physique which is paramount to achieve his sport endeavours. He eats a variety of fish, meat and eggs, but also a variety of local seasonal fruit and vegetables – with the freshest getting the most consumed. Nuts also feature in his varied diet along with oats and full fat yogurt.
